Thomas launched a 519-foot homer that reached the upper deck in center field, and Griffey won his first of three Derby crowns in the 1994 contest.
The two players with the most home runs in the semifinals (which included the player's first round clouts) advanced to the finals. When the Derby first began in 1985 each player received two turns at bat with five outs per turn at bat. The derby started out as a contest between the two leagues, with each league having an equal number of players. At the first derby there were ten players , by the second the number was down to six and the third only featured four sluggers. The Derby expanded to a three-round format in 1991, where players had 10 outs to hit as many home runs as they could with the top four advancing to Round 2 and the top two squaring off in the final.
